What nonprofit marketing is

Nonprofit marketing is everything a mission-driven organization does to move people from not knowing it exists to acting on its behalf. That includes the story you tell, the channels you use to tell it, the website where people give or sign up, and the follow-up that turns a first gift into a lasting relationship.

Most charities have several audiences at once. A food bank needs donors, volunteers, corporate partners, grocery suppliers and the families who use its programs. A theatre company needs ticket buyers, subscribers, sponsors, funders and artists. Each audience wants something different, so a single message rarely works for all of them.

Good nonprofit marketing does three jobs well:

  • Awareness: the right people in your catchment or cause area know who you are and what you do.
  • Conversion: when someone is ready to give, volunteer or register, the path is short, clear and works on a phone.
  • Retention: supporters hear what their help achieved, feel thanked and are invited to do more.

Can you give me an example of nonprofit marketing? Picture a community food bank ahead of the December holidays. It publishes a short video of a volunteer shift, runs search ads for people typing “donate to a food bank near me”, sends a three-email appeal to past donors, and sends every new donor a thank-you message the same day with a note on how many meals their gift helps provide, using the food bank’s own figures. Each piece has one job, and together they form a campaign.

How it differs from for-profit marketing

The biggest difference is that the person paying is often not the person served. A business sells a product to the buyer who uses it. A charity asks a donor to pay for a service that someone else receives. That changes the message: donors buy the feeling of making a difference and the proof that it happened.

Other differences shape every decision:

  • Success is measured in mission outcomes, not profit. Revenue matters because it funds programs, and boards judge marketing by what it enables.
  • Budgets are scrutinized. Donors, funders and the CRA all look at how much a charity spends on fundraising relative to what it raises.
  • Trust is the product. One misleading claim or careless use of client stories can cost years of goodwill.
  • Volunteers do real marketing work, which brings energy and also inconsistency.
  • Timing follows the giving calendar: Giving Tuesday, year-end donation campaigns and program-specific seasons. Receipt issuance has its own process; December 31 is not a statutory receipt-issuance deadline.

What stays the same is discipline. Clear positioning, a fast website, useful search visibility, well-built emails and honest measurement work for charities for the same reasons they work for companies.

Social marketing, nonprofit marketing and the four Ps

Social marketing is a method for changing behaviour for the public good, while nonprofit marketing is the marketing a mission-driven organization does for itself. A public health campaign that encourages people to get screened is social marketing. A hospital foundation asking for donations to buy equipment is nonprofit marketing. Many organizations do both: a mental health charity might fundraise and also run campaigns that encourage people to talk about their wellbeing.

The four Ps of social marketing

The four Ps of social marketing adapt the classic marketing mix to behaviour change:

  • Product: the behaviour you are promoting and the benefit people get from adopting it.
  • Price: what the behaviour costs the person in money, time, effort or social comfort.
  • Place: where and when people can act, such as a clinic, a website or a drop-in centre.
  • Promotion: the messages, messengers and channels that encourage the change.

Practitioners often add publics, partnerships, policy and purse strings, because behaviour change rarely happens without allies and funding. For a charity, the practical lesson is to reduce the price of acting: fewer form fields, clearer directions and a message that answers the person’s real hesitation.

The Canadian rules that shape charity marketing

Canadian charities market inside a framework set by the Income Tax Act, CRA guidance, anti-spam law and privacy law. This is general information, not legal advice; your counsel or accountant should confirm how each rule applies to your organization.

Registered charities and nonprofits are not the same

Registered charities and other qualified donees can issue official donation receipts for eligible gifts. A nonprofit without qualified-donee status cannot. We confirm the organization’s status before writing donation-page claims or configuring receipts. Google for Nonprofits has separate eligibility rules, so CRA charity registration is not the only Canadian route into that program.

Fundraising guidance

The CRA publishes guidance on fundraising by registered charities. It looks at whether fundraising is conducted in a way that is not deceptive, and it treats the ratio of fundraising costs to fundraising revenue as one of several indicators. Good marketing records, clear campaign budgets and honest claims make those conversations easier.

Public policy dialogue

Registered charities may engage in public policy dialogue and development activities that further their charitable purposes. Partisan political activity, such as supporting or opposing a candidate or party, is not allowed. Advocacy campaigns should be planned with that line in mind.

CASL and email

For registered charities, a message whose primary purpose is fundraising can qualify for the CASL exemption. That can include a charity’s fundraising event or ticket appeal; a paid ticket does not by itself remove the exemption. Other commercial messages need their own consent or exemption basis. We document the basis for each campaign, retain relevant records and provide a clear way to stop unwanted messages.

Privacy

Privacy obligations depend on the organization, its activities and the jurisdictions involved. Quebec’s private-sector privacy law can apply to nonprofits operating an enterprise; nonprofit status alone does not settle the question. We work with your privacy lead to define appropriate collection, access, retention and consent practices for donor records, participant information, stories and photographs.

Knowing your donors, volunteers and clients

Every effective campaign starts with a specific person and a specific action. “Raise awareness” is not a target. “Get 40 lapsed monthly donors in Ottawa to restart their gift” is.

Build a short profile for each audience you rely on:

  • Individual donors: why they first gave, how they prefer to give, and what proof of impact they respond to.
  • Monthly donors: supporters whose recurring gifts help with planning and who need clear updates and easy account changes.
  • Major donors and foundations: people who read reports, meet in person and expect precise outcomes.
  • Volunteers: people giving time, who need clear roles, schedules and appreciation.
  • Program participants: the people you serve, who need plain language, accessibility and dignity.
  • Corporate partners: companies looking for employee engagement and credible community ties.

Your CRM, donation history and program data already hold most of what you need. A short survey of recent donors and a few conversations with front-line staff usually fill the gaps. Canada Create™ also uses search data to show what people in your area actually type when they look for your cause, which often reveals demand you have not planned for.

Building a nonprofit marketing plan

A nonprofit marketing plan is a one-year document that links each goal to an audience, a message, a channel and a measure. It does not need to be long. It needs to be used.

  1. Set goals from the strategic plan. Tie each marketing goal to a mission or revenue target the board already approved.
  2. Choose audiences. Rank them by the value of the action you need and how reachable they are.
  3. Write the message. One core story, supported by proof points you can document.
  4. Pick channels. Match channels to audiences rather than trying to be everywhere.
  5. Build the calendar. Map campaigns to the giving calendar, program seasons and board meetings.
  6. Measure and adjust. Review results monthly, keep what works and stop what does not.

The campaign calendar should match the organization’s goals, review capacity and budget. We can support a focused appeal or coordinate several campaigns, with clear owners for content, creative, data and approvals. That makes the workload visible before commitments are made.

Your website as the donation engine

The website is an important route from interest to giving, volunteering and registration. It should work alongside event sign-ups, native social forms and other approved channels, with clear next steps and reliable follow-up. We test the routes your supporters actually use rather than assuming every campaign ends on the same page.

What a strong nonprofit site does

A strong site states who you help and how within a few seconds, shows a clear donate button on every page, loads quickly on a phone and meets accessibility expectations. In Ontario, the AODA sets accessibility requirements for many organizations, and building to WCAG guidelines is good practice everywhere.

The donation page

The donation flow needs clear amounts, payment options and information about recurring gifts. Suggested amounts can explain what a gift supports when your own program figures justify the statement. Collect the information needed for payment, eligible receipting and your agreed donor relationship; confirm payment promptly and explain when the official receipt will follow. We test the flow on phones and after material changes.

Platform and hosting

Canada Create™ builds nonprofit sites on WordPress through our WordPress development team, with web design focused on clarity and accessibility. Organizations that sell merchandise, tickets or event passes can add a shop through our ecommerce service. Reliable, secure website hosting matters on campaign days, when traffic spikes and downtime means lost gifts. As a nonprofit web agency we also connect forms to your CRM so supporter data does not sit in inboxes.

Search reaches people at the moment they are looking for help, a place to volunteer or a cause to support. It is often the most cost-effective channel a charity has.

Search engine optimization

SEO for a nonprofit means pages that answer real questions: how to get help, where to drop off donations, how to volunteer, what a program includes. Our SEO service covers technical fixes, content and authority building, and our local SEO work strengthens your Google Business Profile so people find your locations and hours.

Google Ad Grants

Eligible Canadian organizations can apply through Google for Nonprofits, whose registration categories include CRA charities, tax-exempt nonprofit entities and federal or provincial nonprofits, subject to validation and exclusions. Ad Grants has additional activation and account requirements. We review eligibility, landing pages, keywords and meaningful conversion measurement before managing the account. See our Google Ad Grants setup and management service.

Paid nonprofit advertising

Our Google Ads team can coordinate paid and grant accounts around appeals, events and program demand. Paid search, display and social formats give different ways to reach supporters. Audience and remarketing choices are reviewed against the cause, destination, permissions and platform rules, especially for health, religion, political beliefs and people experiencing hardship.

Email, CRM and the supporter journey

Email gives you a way to thank supporters, explain the work their gift supports and invite another action. Welcome messages, impact updates and appeals should fit the relationship and the person’s preferences. We review response and retention over time rather than judging the program by email opens alone.

Core sequences every charity should have:

  • Welcome: who you are, what the gift or sign-up will achieve, and one easy next step.
  • Thank you and receipt: immediate, warm and personal.
  • Impact updates: stories and program results between appeals, so every message is not a request.
  • Monthly giving upgrade: an invitation for engaged one-time donors to give monthly.
  • Lapsed donor win-back: a respectful note to supporters who have not given in a year or more.

All of this depends on clean data. We set up and support donor databases through our nonprofit CRM service and build campaigns through nonprofit email marketing. For our own client work Canada Create™ uses CS+, our CRM, to organize recorded enquiries and follow-up.

Social media, video and community tactics

Social content can show the work behind your mission through interviews, short videos, photography, explainers and campaign graphics. We choose the format for the audience and message, secure the necessary permissions and plan how people can act after viewing it. People receiving support should have control over whether and how their stories are shared.

Marketing tactics for nonprofits that go beyond the post

  • Experiential events: tours, open houses and hands-on volunteer days let people feel the mission.
  • Local micro-influencers: community figures with engaged local followings can introduce you to new supporters at modest cost.
  • Peer-to-peer fundraising: supporters raise money from their own networks for runs, challenges and birthdays.
  • Cross-sector partnerships: businesses, schools and faith groups share your message with audiences you could not reach alone.
  • Recognition: donor walls, milestone badges and personal thank-you videos reward ongoing support.

When you share stories of the people you serve, get written consent, protect identities where needed and let people tell their story in their own words.

Measurement and reporting to your board

Measure what the board and funders care about, then trace it back to channels. Page views and likes are useful signals, but they are not outcomes.

Useful measures include:

  • Online donations and donation page conversion rate
  • New donors, retained donors and monthly donor count
  • Volunteer applications and program registrations
  • Cost per new donor and cost per volunteer by channel
  • Email list growth, open and click rates, and unsubscribes
  • Search visibility for the questions your audiences ask

We reconcile permitted website events with donation-platform, registration and CRM records, showing recorded sources and gaps in attribution. Analytics is configured to exclude personal contact information and sensitive participant details. Your board receives a concise view of results, campaign costs and the next decisions, with the underlying assumptions explained.

Budgets, cost drivers and return

Nonprofit marketing cost depends on scope, not on the word charity. The clearest way to budget is to separate one-time setup, monthly management and third-party costs such as ad spend or software.

ServiceSetupMonthly managementThird-party costs
SEOAudit and technical fixesMonthly management. Custom-scoped engagements; proposal after discoveryNone required
Website and donation pagesDesign and build, quoted by page count and integrationsOptional care planHosting, donation platform fees
Google Ad GrantsAccount build and trackingOngoing optimization, by proposalNone; the grant covers eligible ad spend
Paid advertisingCampaign build and trackingManagement, by proposalAd spend paid to the platform
Email and CRMPlatform setup, data import, sequencesCampaign production, by proposalSoftware subscriptions

What drives the price

The main cost drivers are the number of audiences and campaigns, the size and condition of your website, how many systems must connect, the volume of content and video, and how many locations or languages you serve. Bilingual English and French work adds translation and review time.

Thinking about return

We assess fundraising income, supporter retention and mission-related actions against the full campaign cost. Monthly giving, major gifts, volunteer recruitment and program participation need different measures. Targets come from your organization’s records, capacity and funding goals, and proposed scope changes are documented in a written request and signed amendment.

How the approach changes by type of organization

The fundamentals hold across causes, but the emphasis shifts.

  • Health charities and hospital foundations: major gift and memorial giving, careful patient privacy and strong trust signals.
  • Arts and culture: ticketing, subscriptions and memberships blend with donations, so ecommerce and email matter.
  • Community and social services: program pages must reach people who need help, often on older phones and in several languages.
  • Environmental groups: advocacy, petitions and volunteer events drive list growth that later converts to giving.
  • Education and youth: parents, alumni and school partners are distinct audiences with distinct messages.
  • Faith-based organizations: regular giving, event promotion and community outreach from one site.
  • Associations and member organizations: membership renewals, events and sponsor visibility.

Pro bono help, in-house staff or a nonprofit marketing agency

The right model depends on your budget, your team and how much consistency you need.

Pro bono marketing for nonprofits

Pro bono help from volunteers, students or firms can deliver a logo, a campaign or a site refresh at no fee. It works best for defined, one-time projects with a clear owner on your side. It struggles with ongoing work, because volunteers change and priorities shift.

In-house staff

An internal communications team knows the mission, people and approval process. We can support that team with research, creative production, development, advertising, CRM or measurement, taking on the work your organization chooses to commission.

A nonprofit marketing agency

An agency engagement should make responsibilities, deliverables and cost clear. Ask who handles the account, how campaigns are approved, how results are reported and what happens when priorities change. Canada Create™ brings web, search, advertising, email and CRM specialists into the agreed scope. We are BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, have worked since 2008 and offer 24/7 sales and AI-assisted support intake.

Working with Canada Create has meant so much to me and my business, ProDerma Clinic. When you put your heart into caring for your clients, you want your website and online presence to reflect that same care. I’m so happy with the work Amir and his team have done to help me present my clinic and services with confidence.

They created a beautiful, professional website that brings together my treatments and makes it easy for visitors to learn about the clinic, explore their options, and book a consultation. Having a website I feel proud to share is a wonderful feeling. It gives people an introduction to ProDerma before they even walk through the door.

Their work has also included Google Business Profile optimization, helping me strengthen how my clinic appears on Google Search and Maps. For a local clinic in downtown Toronto, making it easier for people to find accurate information about my services, location, and booking options is incredibly valuable.

What stays with me most is the care and effort behind the work. I’m grateful to Amir and the Canada Create team for helping me build an online presence that reflects the business I’m working so hard to grow.

I would happily recommend Canada Create to other clinic owners and business owners looking for website design, Google Business Profile optimization, and thoughtful marketing guidance. Thank you for supporting ProDerma Clinic and for putting so much heart into your work!

I can't say enough good things about my experience with Canada Create, and especially Amir Vincent, one of the owners. His personal involvement made all the difference.

As the owner of a boutique medical aesthetics practice, my business is very personal to me. I wanted a website that showed not just my services, but the philosophy, warmth and individualized care behind my practice. I had a very particular vision, and Canada Create brought it to life more beautifully than I imagined.

From day one, Amir was professional, enthusiastic and detail-oriented, and he took a real interest in understanding my business. He and his team treated the project as a partnership. They took the time to learn what makes my practice unique and how to communicate that to new clients.

The website is beautiful. It's elegant, welcoming and thoughtfully designed, from the overall look and photography to how the information is laid out. It feels authentic to my brand and makes exactly the impression I was hoping for.

They also arranged a professional photoshoot for my practice, which was a highlight. The photos add a personal touch that captures the personality of my business. That matters so much in an industry built on trust and connection.

I've been just as impressed by their technical knowledge. Canada Create manages my website analytics and helps me understand how the site is performing and how to grow my online presence over time. That ongoing support is invaluable. They understand a website has to do more than look good. It has to help build the business.

Their communication, patience and willingness to listen have been wonderful. They took my ideas seriously while bringing their own expertise and creative suggestions. I always felt valued as a person, not just another client. I've spent years building a practice that reflects my values, so I really appreciate people who take pride in their work, and I see that in Amir and his team.

I'm so proud of what we've created together and look forward to continuing to work with Canada Create as my practice grows. If you're considering a new website, a brand refresh or a stronger online presence, I recommend them wholeheartedly.

Amir, thank you for your guidance, dedication and care. And thank you to the whole Canada Create team for turning my vision into something so beautiful. A five-star experience!

I had a great experience working with this business. They helped me build my tutoring website from scratch and guided me through the entire process.

I knew nothing about how the process worked, but they were professional, patient, and incredibly helpful. They took the time to understand what I wanted, handled the setup and design, and made sure everything worked properly.

I’m very happy with the final result and would definitely recommend them to anyone who needs help creating a professional website or getting their business online.

Working with Canada Create and Amir Vincent has been an absolute game-changer. I came to them looking for help with social media strategy and creative edits, and they didn’t just deliver, they elevated everything. From the first call, Amir’s clarity, professionalism, and creative eye stood out. You can tell this team genuinely cares about brand quality and impact, not just ticking boxes.

They took my ideas, refined them with precision, and turned them into polished, scroll-stopping content that actually converts. Every edit felt intentional, every post had strategy behind it, and the communication was seamless. No ego, no fluff just pure execution and results.

What impressed me most was Amir’s leadership. He’s not just a CEO, he’s a creative visionary who pushes for excellence in every detail. He listens, adapts, and brings real insight to the table. It’s rare to find a partner who can merge design aesthetics, marketing psychology, and performance thinking like that.

If you’re serious about growing your brand, sharpening your content game, or leveling up your digital presence Canada Create is the team you want in your corner. Amir and his crew don’t play small; they build brands that command attention.

Nonprofit marketing questions

What is nonprofit marketing?

Nonprofit marketing is the planned work of earning attention, trust and action for a cause, such as donations, volunteer hours, program sign-ups and advocacy.

How do you market a nonprofit?

Set goals from your strategic plan, choose priority audiences, write one clear story with proof, pick the channels those audiences use, build a calendar around giving seasons and measure results monthly.

Can you give me an example of nonprofit marketing?

A food bank holiday campaign that combines a volunteer video, search ads, a three-email appeal to past donors and a same-day thank-you message is a typical example.

What is the difference between social marketing and nonprofit marketing?

Social marketing aims to change behaviour for the public good, such as encouraging health screening. Nonprofit marketing is the marketing an organization does for itself, such as fundraising and recruiting volunteers.

What are the four Ps of social marketing?

Product, price, place and promotion, adapted to behaviour change: the behaviour and its benefit, what it costs the person, where they can act and how the message reaches them.

What is the difference between for-profit and nonprofit marketing?

In nonprofit marketing the person paying is often not the person served, success is measured in mission outcomes, and budgets and claims face closer scrutiny from donors, funders and the CRA.

Is pro bono marketing a good option for nonprofits?

Pro bono help works well for defined one-time projects with a clear owner. Ongoing channels such as SEO, ads and email usually need consistent, paid specialist support.

Can you manage our Google Ad Grants account?

Yes. We review your organization’s eligibility and manage approved Ad Grants accounts, including keywords, landing pages and meaningful conversion measurement. Canadian eligibility includes several nonprofit registration categories, subject to Google’s validation, exclusions and product requirements.

Do you work with nonprofits that are not registered charities?

Yes. We work with registered charities and other nonprofit organizations. Official donation receipts depend on qualified-donee status, while Google programs and other grants have their own eligibility requirements. We confirm the relevant status before making claims or configuring the service.
